HISTORY

Flamingo Elementary began classes in September of 1957 as a neighborhood school and shared ten-acres with a neighborhood park. Its original name was not Flamingo, but East Hialeah Elementary.

The name Flamingo was chosen by its students at the time. This name was chose because of the flamingos that resided at the famous Hialeah Park nearby.

The children walked and rode bicycles to school and soon it became a focal point in the community.

The students and parents took pride in planting garden around the school the first several years.

The enrollment increased and it was necessary to add a two story wing to the building.

Air conditioning was unknown at the time but it had been built so that breezes could make the classrooms comfortable for students. The large open space to the east of the building for physical education classes.

Since its earlier days, many improvements have been made to Flamingo special classrooms and offices.
