A Message from Ms. Claudia
Hessing
Dear Flamingo Elementary School’s Family,
On behalf of
the administrative team, we would like to take this opportunity
to extend an enthusiastic warm welcome as you return from a
well-deserved vacation. We are excited about the implementation
of unique programs and activities that inspire, motivate and
ignite the flame of knowledge within the next generation of
explorers and innovators during the 2008-2009 School Year.
We would like
to take this opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments
during the 2007-2008 School Year.
·
Flamingo Elementary School once again received an
“A” earning 578 points.
·
Flamingo Elementary School met Adequate Yearly
Progress (A.Y.P.) for the third consecutive year, in
keeping with the “No Child Left Behind Act” (N.C.L.B.). The
federal law, N.C.L.B., requires that every public school and
school district make Adequate Yearly Progress towards state
proficiency goals.

Flamingo Elementary School was recognized by the
School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, for Superior
performance in the 2006-2007 school year. We received a Platinum
Award.
·
Flamingo Elementary School’s Saturday Academy was
sponsored through a grant from the Citrus Health Network in the
amount of $22,076.64. We provided intervention services for an
average of two hundred students per session who enthusiastically
participated in the academy for ten sessions.
·
Flamingo Elementary School conducted a Dedication
Ceremony on December 12, 2007 in celebration of our school’s
participation in the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) Explorer Schools Program. Commander John
Bennett Herrington, a NASA Astronaut, served as a guest speaker
throughout the day, as well as, participated in the Parent
Academy Science Night.

Flamingo Elementary School improved its
school-wide attendance average attaining number five in among
all elementary schools in the North Central Area (formerly
Regional Center I) for the 2007-2008 school year with 97.92%;
number five in the first quarter with 97.62%, number three
during the second quarter with 97.03 %, and number four during
the third quarter with 97.14%.

Flamingo Elementary School participated in the
Health Connect Program funded by the Children’s Trust for the
second consecutive year. The Citrus Health Network provided our
students with services from a nurse, nurse’s aide and social
worker. Our students were featured in a community outreach
commercial sponsored by the Children’s Trust regarding the
services offered to students, parents and the community at
large.

Flamingo Elementary School received the Dell Tech
Know Grant for the second consecutive year. The Dell Tech Know
Program is designed to teach students about technology
developing an understanding about computers and their
applications. The students learn this process by disassembling
and reassembling computers. After successful completion of the
program, students are able to take home the computer they
rebuilt.

Flamingo Elementary School received the Florida
Department of Education Golden School Volunteer Award for the
eighteenth consecutive year.
·
Flamingo Elementary School raised $6,551.00 during
the Student and Employee United Way Campaigns.
The
implementation of our school’s mission has successfully been
accomplished by an “exemplary faculty/staff”. We would
like to take a moment to share a few accolades received by our
faculty.
1)
Ms. Judy Herrell, instructor of fifth grade students, has
received national recognition for the “Paperless
Classroom”. Ms. Herrell, her students, and the “Paperless
Classroom”, a one-of-a kind program, have been featured
in local newspapers, media and publications throughout the
nation.
2)
Mr. Elmo Sanchez, instructor of fourth and fifth grade
Gifted students, is currently featured in the book by Dr. Harry
Wong’s “First Days of School” classroom management
book. He is also featured in Dr. Wong’s website,
teachers.net sharing ideas and advice on management
skills.
3)
Ms. Isela Rodriguez, Media Specialist, Ms. Ana Polanco,
instructor of fifth grade students, and Ms. Astrid Arrojo,
instructor of fourth grade students have achieved National
Board Certification. Ms. Linda Perez, instructor of
kindergarten, and Ms. Niurys Gonzalez, instructor of fourth
grade students have successfully submitted all requirements for
National Board Certification.
In this light,
we would like to acknowledge our parents, community and business
partners for the contributions and unwavering dedication to our
students, faculty and staff.

We launch our
theme for the 2008-2009 school year, Within Sight! Within
Reach! Within Us!....“ Reach for the Stars” With this in
mind, our theme is best described by William Arthur Ward,
“If you can imagine it, you can create it. If you can dream it,
you can become it.”
As an
educational family committed to excellence, we continue to move
forward fueled by our motivation, spirit of collaboration and
commitment to students.
